Mission Miracle
Maker 2009
During the last week of July we held our annual children’s holiday club and this year it was called Mission Miracle Maker. A willing band of volunteers performed the first miracle of the week when they transformed the church into the space ship Millennium Parrot.
We also created space pod areas in the hall for the 9 crews, a registration area, security scanner and a space control desk – it is amazing what you can achieve with large cardboard boxes, silver foil, lights and lots of creative talent. The end result was fantastic and really helped to convince the children they were in outer space.
Once again, over the week we were taken aback by the sheer energy and enthusiasm of the children and their ability to be so open and honest withus – which at times was very humbling.
So what did happen during the week? – we had a mixture of activities – some in their small groups with their Crew Captain and others all together in the spaceship. Some were messy and energetic and others were quiet and thoughtful.
The Biblical aspect centred on the Miracles of Jesus and each day we watched an extract from a DVD called the Miracle Maker. We looked atthe miracle of Jesus’ birth in that God was his father, how Jesus could control even the fish, how he healed people and even raised people from the dead and finally the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection and that he is alive today.
The highlight of the morning was the next instalment of the Watt family drama and the adventures they had when they accidentally ended up in space instead of taking the grandmother to the supermarket. This was performed by members of our junior team and is always very popular with the children.
96 children came to the club – not all on the same day I hasten to add –
although sometimes it seemed like it. So why did we do this? The answer
is that we do this because we want to share something of the love of God
with these children and also to have a great time together. This was all
made possible by a tremendous team – both in number and talent.
As well as people working directly with the children we had people helping with registration, making tea, preparing for the craft and activity sessions, - we
had AV operators, puppeteers, actors and furniture shifters.
Everyone worked together to make the week run smoothly and altogether
over 40 people were part of the team. So a big thank you to everyone for
their tireless work and their enthusiasm without which this week would
not have been possible. And a very big Thank You to all the members of
this congregation who have upheld us during the week with your prayers.
